I feel the need to talk about Surly Beer. It seems to me people have gone nuts trying to get some of this Beer. So......., what is going on here ??? Here are some of the latest Surly happenings. Last August we headed over to the Brewery for a tour and to taste this golden elixer. Well, the place was a madhouse of people, they ran out of at least 2 of their Brews and ran out of Growlers. We did a tour and had some of the Coffee Bender. Which is an awesome Beer.
The next Surly madness was, the Autumn Brew Review in September at the old Grain Belt Brewery parking lot. There were about 40 Breweries represented. The Surly booth had a listing of when they would release there next special Brew at this event, with a large digital clock counting down the time. People were probably 50 deep waiting in line for a 2 ounce sample. Insane, to say the least, in my view anyway. At the end of the event, we finally got some foam to sample. 
The paper called Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine (mspmag.com) has declared Surly Furious "Best Local Beer". My response is, "Really ??" Did we poll the Twin Cities area ?, was a panel of Beer judges selected and made this proclamation ? I personally do not like Furious at all. I do not like a ton of Hops in my Beer. Personal taste. Declarations like these just adds to the crazyness.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Surly Darkness ranks as one the 12 best in the world. Who determined this, I do not know. I was not asked. You can go to the Brewery on December 15th and buy a double duce (22 ounce bottle) for 15 bucks (limit 2 bottles) and find out for yourself. Surly Coffee Bender won a Gold medal at the Great Amercian Beer Festival in Denver this year also. At least this is an award that carries some weight, plus I have had it after fighting a ton of people to get a sample and I can say it is a good one. There is plenty more awards and stuff for Surly to write about but, my question was, what is going on here ?
Well, in my view what we have, is a case of supply and demand. Does Surly make great Beers ? Yes, no doubt. But, I'm not going to pay 15 bucks for bottle or stand in line for 20 minutes for a 2 ounce sample. The point here is , if Surly expands and makes more, then there will be an excess. If they just make enough so people can't get it, then people think they are really getting something, when they do get it. I'm not knocking Surly Brewing, I think the people who crave it, have made it into a cult following. I like most of Surly's Beers but, it's just not that big of a deal folks. Relax.
